Gold or Silver: How to Choose What Suits You

August 2026 · 5 min read

Skip the guesswork. Your undertone, the contrast in your colouring, and even the rest of your wardrobe all point toward a metal that will simply look more "you" — here's how to find it.

Start with your undertone

Look at the veins on the inside of your wrist in natural light. If they appear greenish, you likely have a warm undertone, which tends to sit beautifully with gold. If they look blue or purple, you likely lean cool, which is where silver usually shines. Somewhere in between? You're neutral, and honestly, both metals will work.

Think about contrast, not just colour

Undertone is a good starting point, but contrast matters just as much. If you have deep hair and fair skin, higher-contrast metals like polished silver or white gold can echo that same drama. Softer, lower-contrast colouring often pairs beautifully with the warmth of yellow gold.

"The 'right' metal is the one you reach for without thinking — not the one a chart tells you to wear."

Consider what's already in your jewellery box

Mixing metals is completely fine, but if you're building a cohesive collection, it helps to pick a dominant tone. Look at your most-worn pieces — watch, everyday rings, a signature necklace — and let that guide new purchases so everything feels intentional rather than random.

Match the mood, not just the skin tone

Gold tends to read as warm, rich, and a little more festive, while silver often feels cooler, cleaner, and more minimal. If you're drawn to a particular aesthetic — soft and romantic versus sharp and modern — that instinct is worth trusting as much as any undertone test.

  • Check your veins — greenish leans gold, blue leans silver.
  • Read your contrast — high contrast often suits silver, softer contrast suits gold.
  • Audit your current pieces — build around what you already love.
  • Trust your taste — the metal that matches your style will always feel right.

There's no rule that says you have to choose just one. Plenty of the best-dressed hands wear a little of both — the key is wearing whichever metal makes you feel most like yourself.
